Yiliang Peng, known on social media as DoubleLift, is an American professional gamer best known for his success in League of Legends. Many consider him as one of the best American-born League of Legends players. The gamer is known for both his high skill level and his boisterous personality. Yiliang has won five North American championships and boosts more than a million followers across his social media channels.
Yiliang Peng, known on social media as DoubleLift, was born on July 19, 1993 in California, the United States.
As of September 2021, Yiliang “DoubleLift” Peng has more than 265,000 followers on Instagram, 654,000 subscribers on YouTube, 948,800 followers on Twitter, and 1.6 million followers on Twitch.
DoubleLift grew up playing console games before switching to PC games like World of Warcraft and, eventually, League of Legends. Growing up, the gamer would struggle with his parents about his dreams to become a professional Esports player. “I would always struggle with my parents… we would just argue over everything, especially games. When I wanted to play they thought it was just a complete waste of time. It got worse and worse over the years,” he said.
The gamer first started playing League of Legends professionally when the founder of Counter Logic Gaming, George “HotshotGG” Georgallidis, recruited him as a substitute player. He left the team shortly after to join Epik Gamer and then he joined UnRestricted. Team Curse acquired UnRestricted later.
For many months, the gamer kept his professional Esports career a secret from his parents. However, in 2011, DoubleLift needed to attend his first major tournament, the Dreamhack Summer 2011, the Riot Season 1 Championship, in Sweden. “They wouldn’t let me go… They were like ‘You’re going to die if you go to Sweden for Dreamhack’,” the gamer recalled.
His parents eventually gave him permission to go, but when he returned home, the tense relationship continued with his parents. In 2011, he opted to pursue gaming over college and his parents kicked him out of the house. He took only his computer and his prize money from Dreamhack. The recounting of the event on Reddit, titled “Hi I’m Doublelift, formerly of team [Epik Gamer], and today I became homeless,” gained a lot of attention.
The gamer decided to go all-in on his career in Esports. He earned money writing educational guides on League of Legends for Team Curse.
DoubleLift’s career began to take off the more he competed in tournaments, though. In 2015, the gamer joined the popular Team SoloMid and in 2017, he moved to Team Liquid.
In 2018, DoubleLift had a shocking personal event: his older brother killed his mother and seriously injured his father. His older brother, he had said in an interview many years prior, had the biggest impact on his gaming career. “I’m still processing this news and joining up with my dad and little brother to make sure they’re ok and the proper arrangements are being made. I’ll likely be quiet on social media while I work through this. I hope you all understand and support me as you always have in the past,” he posted on Twitter.
Pressure from Team Liquid ensured that DoubleLift kept playing that season, despite him wanting to take time off. That year, Team Liquid defeated 100 Thieves to take their very first league championship.
DoubleLift was awarded the NA LCS Most Valuable Player award prior to the NA LCS finals. Team Liquid defeated Cloud9 to capture back-to-back LCS titles.
Many consider DoubleLift one of the best American-born League of Legends players. The gamer is known for both his high skill level and his boisterous personality. Yiliang has won five North American championships and boosts more than a million followers across his social media channels.
