Western Student Dies After Being Assaulted & His Family Say He Was A ‘Gentle & Kind Soul’

Gabriel Neil, an 18-year-old first-year student at Western University, died after being assaulted on September 11 near Western University’s campus.

Neil was assaulted on Saturday resulting in serious injuries at around 2 a.m. in the area of Western Road and Sarnia Road according to London Police. He was later transported to a hospital where he remained in critical condition until he “succumbed to his injuries,” according to a news release posted on September 12.

Neil’s family released a statement to CTV News London regarding his tragic death saying “We are absolutely devastated by the loss of Gabe. He was a gentle and kind soul who made friends wherever he went. He was excited to be starting his first year of Kinesiology at Western and had aspirations of one day becoming a doctor.”

The family went on to thank, “the staff at Western University, London Police Service, the paramedics that responded to the scene, the emergency room staff at London Health Sciences Center, Victoria Hospital, and a special thank you to the staff of the Critical Care Trauma Centre, for the care they have provided not only to Gabe but to us as well.”

Aliyan Ahmed, 21, has been arrested and charged with one count of manslaughter in connection to Neil’s death and the homicide investigation is still ongoing according to London Police.
