TikTok is a tale of two apps. The Chinese company, Bytedance, released a video-sharing social network app they called Douyin in 2016. That app still exists separately in China. They named the international version of their app TikTok when they released it in 2017. Much of TikTok’s Western audience initially followed Musical.ly, which Bytedance merged into TikTok in 2018. Although TikTok and Douyin feature similar user interfaces and features, they are not identical, being customized for their respective markets.
TikTok has become exceptionally popular in recent years, particularly with the younger Millennials and Generation Z. It hasn’t grown without controversy, however. Then-president, Donald Trump, threatened to ban TikTok in the United States in 2020 unless Bytedance let an American company, like Microsoft, buy TikTok in that country. A proposed ban was, however, blocked by a federal judge. Despite TikTok being very popular with India’s youth, that country’s government banned the app in June 2020 due to a border clash between India and China.
Neither TikTok nor its forerunner, Musical.ly, provide many statistics publicly. It is much harder to find follower lists than most other social networks, for example. However, with such a convoluted history, it is not too difficult to discover quite a few TikTok statistics that others have independently collated.

1. TikTok Users Spend More than 850 Minutes Per Month on the App
According to Statista, US TikTok users average 858 minutes per month on the app. This statistic gives information on monthly TikTok app user engagement in the United States in March 2020.
If you examine the data from October 2019 to March 2020, you will note a considerable increase in the time that the average TikTok user spent on the app. Usage grew from an average of 442.9 minutes per month in October 2019 to 526.1 minutes in November, 561.2 minutes in December, 680 minutes in January 2020, 731.6 minutes in February, and 858 minutes in March 2020.
2. 23% of US Internet Users Have Used or Seen Videos on TikTok

Although monthly app downloads vary greatly, TikTok took second place in the list of most downloaded iPhone apps for 2020. The only app with more downloads was, perhaps unsurprisingly in the first year of COVID, Zoom. TikTok even managed to achieve more downloads on Apple’s mobile platform than Facebook, Messenger, Gmail, Netflix, YouTube, and Instagram.

When you add both Apple and Android downloads, TikTok surged ahead of all other apps in 2020, with global downloads of 850 million. This compares to second-placed WhatsApp’s 600 million downloads. According to their survey, 48% of US adults aged 18-29 say they have used TikTok, compared to 22% of those aged 30-49, 14% of 50–64-year-olds, and 4% of those aged 65+. They didn’t analyze those aged under 18.
Chinese statistics for Douyin suggest that users are aging with the app. In March 2020, 10.1% of users were aged under 18 (down from 10.5% in 2019). The change was even more noticeable for 19-24-year-olds, with 13.3% of users in that age band (down from 18.7%). Numbers were closer for 25-30-year-olds, 16.6% in 2020 (compared to 18.8% in 2019). The big increase came with 31-35-year-olds, who made up 20.6% of the Douyin user base in 2020 (up from 15.6% in 2019). Despite TikTok now being a seasoned app and no longer available in India, its stellar success keeps rolling along like a juggernaut. According to Sensortower, people downloaded TikTok 80 million times in May 2021. Sure, this is down from its peak times (TikTok had 115 million downloads in March 2020), yet TikTok still managed to top the month for non-game downloads in both Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
42. Nearly 100 Million App Installs in India in 2020 Despite Being Banned For Half the Year
Although TikTok has always been very popular in its home country, China (albeit as Douyin), India saw the most significant growth externally in both 2019 and 2020. It grew so rapidly that the Indian government became concerned enough to ban it for a while in 2019 before banning it again in 2020 because of border disputes between India and China. Despite this, there were still 99 million app installs in India in the first six months of that year before the government implemented the ban. A court has recently agreed that the ban should be permanent, with TikTok announcing that it will be laying off most local employees.

TikTok very much appeals to the young, although it seems to be keeping its audience as they age. According to a Fall 2020 Survey from Piper Sands, Snapchat is still U.S. teenagers’ favorite social media platform. However, Instagram has fallen from No. 2 to No. 3, with TikTok moving up to second. TikTok adoption is on the rise — up to 69%, compared to 62% who used the app in Spring 2020.

45. Bytedance Valued at $180 Billion
ByteDance was valued at $180 billion as of late 2020. This compares to a value of $78 billion in November 2018. ByteDance is a privately owned entity, but many are hopefully waiting for its initial public offering (IPO), which investors expect to happen in Hong Kong sometime in 2021.
However, some estimates place Bytedance’s value at even greater than that. According to Bloomberg, shares of ByteDance Ltd were trading at a valuation of more than $250 billion in the secondary market in March 2021. The South China Morning Post suggests that the company’s valuation could be approaching $400 billion for private-equity investors.
46. First Temporary Indian Ban Cost 15 Million New Users
Indian legislators were so concerned about TikTok that they temporarily placed a ban on the app in 2019. They were worried that TikTok would expose children to inappropriate content. While that ban didn’t last long, it cost the app an estimated 15 million new users.
Of course, in late June 2020, the government imposed a longer-term ban, which the courts have since confirmed can be permanent. Who knows how many potential users TikTok has lost as a result of this.
47. 20% of Those With Household Income of More Than $75,000 Have Used TikTok
According to Pew Research’s 2021 survey on the use of online social platforms by US adults, TikTok is used relatively evenly by people across the income spectrum. 22% of those who earn under $30K claim to have used TikTok, as do 29% of those making $30K-$49,999, 20% of those earning $50K-$74,999, and 20% of those earning $75K+.
According to older research quoted by MarketingCharts, 37% of TikTok’s US users come from households with an income of $100,000 or more.
However, it is also relatively popular with low-income families. 18% of its users claim to be from households earning less than $25,000 per annum. These statistics will be skewed by the exclusion of those aged under 18 – a large proportion of TikTok’s target audience. Also, many lower-income households could well be student flats, poor now, but potentially well-off once they graduate.
48. 61% of U.S. TikTok Users Are Women
TikTok is noticeably more popular with females than it is with males, in the US at least. As of March 2021, females accounted for 61% of TikTok’s users, with males counting for 39%, according to Statista.
Pew Research’s 2021 survey on the use of online social platforms by US adults aged 18 and over indicates that 24% of women and 17% of men have used the platform. Of course, these numbers omit the large number of TikTok users who are aged under 18. Still, the 24% figure for adult women is higher than the percentage who have used Twitter (22%), and the 17% figure for adult men is higher than the equivalent figure for male Pinterest users (16%).
49. More Balanced Use in Japan
When you look at the demographics of TikTok’s Japanese users, you see a more balanced approach. Both genders use TikTok approximately equally in Japan. Also, the two highest age groups to use TikTok in Japan are teenagers (15%) and users in their 40s (12.1%).
50. Indian Users Predominantly Male
The most significant increase in TikTok users over 2019 was in India. Unlike in most other countries, the typical Indian TikTok user is a male in his 20s. Indeed 90.5% of Indian TikTok users in December 2019 were male.
51. Gender Balance of Douyin users Changed Noticeably in 2020
In March 2019, Douyin’s Chinese audience had a male bias – 58.7% male to 41.3% female. Over the next year, however, those percentages almost reversed, and by March 2020, only 43% of Douyin users were male, with female users now accounting for 57% of the total.

The average person has downloaded many apps to their phone, which they rarely use. However, TikTok users continue to use the app once they download it. According to App Ape statistics, 22.6% of users actively used it for at least 2/3 of the month. 53. TikTok’s Users Are Aging with the App
There is no doubt that TikTok is extremely popular with teenagers across the world. However, there is now some evidence that its user base is aging. People aren’t just giving up on TikTok because they believe they have outgrown it. This is particularly evident in some regions. In countries such as China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, membership among 25-34 year-olds is higher than among 16-24s.
Katherine Wu has annotated and translated an official 2019 Douyin Data Report that gives a fascinating insight into the typical Douyin user. It disclosed that videos shared on Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) in 2019 included videos of 460,000 families, 3.8 million parents with their children, 1.76 million videos welcoming newborns, and 7.09 million videos on weddings.
55. Most Popular Type of Dog in Douyin Videos is the Husky
The Douyin data report goes on to extrapolate some conclusions from the videos people shared on Douyin in 2019. The most popular type of dog was the husky. The most popular type of cat was the Dragon Li (a Chinese version of a tabby), and the most popular type of duck was the call duck. The most popular profession shown as the subjects of Chinese videos were teachers, followed by nurses and firefighters.
56. 3rd Fastest Growing Brand of 2020
When Morning Consult created their Fastest Growing Brands 2020 report, they named TikTok the third fastest growing brand after Zoom and Peacock. Morning Consult observes that nearly every brand that occupies a spot on the Fastest Growing Brands list is meaningfully connected to pandemic-related behavior. Notably, six of the 20 Fastest Growing Brands are involved in video streaming: Peacock, TikTok, HBO Max, Twitch, Tubi T.V., and Pluto TV.
With Peacock appealing more to older generations, TikTok was the second fastest growing brand of 2020, behind just Zoom, for Generation Z and Millennials. Perhaps surprisingly, TikTok even made the list (in tenth place) for Generation X.
57. Children Aged 4-15 Average 75 minutes Per Day on TikTok
Digital safety app maker Qustodio reports that kids aged four to 15 now spend an average of 75 minutes per day watching TikTok videos, alongside their 68 minutes per day watching YouTube Kids / 64 minutes watching standard YouTube videos. This survey was across the US, UK, and Spain from February 2019 to April 2020.
However, when you look at the US alone, kids aged four to 15 now spend an average of 87 minutes per day watching TikTok videos.

Another finding from the Qustodio 2021 Annual Report on Children’s Digital Habits is that TikTok is now the most popular social app for kids aged four- to 15-year-olds globally. YouTube is not included in this statistic, instead being considered an online video app (like Netflix and Disney Plus).
TikTok still hasn’t taken over the youngsters of the United States, however. Whereas 41% of global kids use TikTok and 39% Facebook, in the US, the preference is reversed; 41% use Facebook and 38% TikTok. Spanish kids love TikTok, however, with 55% of them using the app.
One notable change between 2019 and 2020 was a comparative reduction in the use of Instagram by kids. Instagram had been the most popular social media app among kids in 2019, ahead of Facebook. Indeed, Instagram’s popularity dropped 43% year on year.

Quastodio also observed that just as TikTok became the most used social media app for kids in 2020, it also rose to become the most blocked by parents globally and across all surveyed regions. TikTok was followed by Instagram, Snapchat, and then Facebook in that order for parental blocking.
