architecture+ was engaged to provide programming, design, and construction administration services for the Partial Renovation of the Milne Library on the SUNY Oneonta Campus. This project was undertaken to enhance core library function spaces while improving the student experience with the addition of new program areas. Program areas introduced into the library included the Academic Success Center, Accessibility Resources, and a Learning Commons.

architecture+ collaborated with Aaron Cohen Associates to facilitate programming workshops with all of the current library occupants as well as those being introduced. The programming effort focused on establishing the location of functions within the building to best provide services to the patrons.
Accessibility Resources is introduced as an accessible destination at the south end of the first floor. This location within the building is easily found, but the layout provides the necessary privacy and acoustical separation. It boasts a new state-of-the-art testing center, providing accommodations to address student needs. Cross-purposing space will make the center available to all students for off-hour studying and computer access.

A realignment of the reference collection on the first floor allows for a Learning Commons to be developed to create a new student-focused collaborative dynamic working destination on campus. The Commons incorporates break-out study booths, group study rooms, classrooms, and a variety of both collaborative and individual seating options. The reference desk and associated collection anchor the commons with staff readily available for consultation and support. The circulation desk maintains its direct relationship with the main entrance to the building as a primary touch point for service. Establishing a visual connection to the Learning Commons and reference desk supports student service.
A new User Experience touch point greets patrons upon their arrival on the second floor. This destination was created to provide research support proximate to the collection located on the upper floors. Research consultation and group space have been introduced to support reference assistance and instruction. The Academic Success Center seamlessly integrates at the south end of the floor, providing professional and peer tutoring services. A large reading room has been developed to link the User Experience touch point and the Academic Success Center destination. The reading room, adjacent classroom, and group spaces will support the peer tutoring programs and offer different study opportunities for students.

The print collection is maintained primarily at the north end of the second and third floors. Table and soft seating areas are developed along the perimeter of the collection to take advantage of the natural light and views, thereby creating desirable reflective study destinations. The building was occupied for the duration of the project and remained fully operational during this $5.6 million renovation. We designed the project to be renovated in phases by floor to minimize disruption.
“It is not often that a project comes in on budget and ahead of schedule; I fully credit architecture+ and their team of professionals’ collaborative approach to design and construction that helped make it happen—well done!”
