Stefán Karl Stefánsson was an Icelandic actor and puppeteer best known for his role as Robbie Rotten in the Nickelodeon show “LazyTown.” Stefan was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in 2016 and passed away in 2018 after his cancer was deemed inoperable.
Stefán Karl Stefánsson was born on July 10, 1975 in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland and died on August 21, 2018 in Iceland.
As of September 2020, Stefan has more than 1 million subscribers on YouTube. When the actor was diagnosed with cancer later in his life, he began to shut down all his social media accounts. His YouTube account remains as his single social media profile.
Stefan’s career started when he was 19 years old. While growing up, his high school principal told him that “acting is not about making faces and changing your face” — something he disagreed with. The young actor worked as a puppeteer on television. At the same time, he attended classes at the Drama Academy of Iceland.
Later in his career, Icelandic gymnast Magnus Sceving invited Stefan to act as one of the characters in the “Lazy Town” play. The actor had started “Lazy Town” when he realized Iceland’s children weren’t as active as they should be.
Stefan played the role of Robbie Rotten, who liked to stay indoors and sleep a lot. Magnus portrayed Sportacus, a character who loved fitness and being active.
The musical went on to become successful, and Nickelodeon approached the pair about a television deal. The TV channel aired the first 40 episodes of LazyTown in the early 2000s in a special studio they built in Iceland. Stefan started the show speaking very little English, but he later became fluent.
“LazyTown” put Stefan and Mangus on the map.
Stefan and his wife Steinunn Ólína Þorsteinsdóttir eventually moved to Los Angeles. The couple had four children together: three girls and one son.
In October 2016, Stefan announced he had been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. The Lazy Town head writer created a GoFundMe to help Stefan pay for his costs once he could not work anymore. To help spread the campaign, people on YouTube made parodies of his work and linked to the GoFundMe account. Two songs from “LazyTown,” “We Are Number One” and “The Mine Song,” became internet memes.
In 2017, Stefan his metastases were removed after a successful liver surgery. However, the following year in March 2018, his cancer was diagnosed as inoperable. In Aril 2018, Stefan said he would not continue chemotherapy to prolong his life and shut down most of his social media profiles.
Stefan died on August 2018 when he was just 43 years old. There was no funeral, per his wishes, and his ashes were scattered in the ocean in privacy.
To preserve his legacy, his former manager Cheryl Edison announced the launch of the Stefán Karl Academy & Center for the Performing Arts in Switzerland to memorialize him.
There have been petitions online to put up a statue of him in his hometown, as well.
In June 2018, Stefan was awarded the Order of the Falcon, the only order of chivalry in Iceland.
