In 2018, the young athlete opened up about one of her biggest health challenges. She was diagnosed with the condition Chiari malformation, which in turn will cause her brain tissue to extend into her spinal canal. Doctors think it may be extending into her pituitary gland and impacting her growth.

“The medical result means I need to show more heart and put in more hours than anyone else,” Sabre said in an interview. But she’s still coping with the diagnosis, worried it may impact her ability to skate and surf. One of the symptoms of the medical condition is scoliosis, which Sabre was diagnosed with.

“I’ve got to learn to live with it,” Sabre said. “If you’ve got something wrong with you, you’ve got to accept it and not hide it. You need to tell someone about it, so you don’t feel so alone.”

Sabre remains determined to reach the Olympics one day and compete in skateboarding for Australia.
