In April 2020, Payton released his debut single “Love Letter.” In an interview with ET, he explained the inspiration behind his new song: “I’ll just be, like, driving and [an idea] will just hit,” he explained. “I like being more vulnerable in my songs just because I’ll get those people that are going through the same thing that I am, that can relate to my music and, like, actually listen to it with a purpose.”
Payton has loved music for a long time, though. In a 2020 YouTube video, he said: “Music’s a huge part of my life. I started to get into music when I was 9 years old and I fell in love with it ever since then.”
He wanted to release music earlier in his career, he said in a 2020 video, but insecurities got the best of him. “Music has been such a big part of my life but I never showed it because [I’m] really self-conscious about that stuff, get really insecure about it and I never showed any of that on social media because it was a personal thing that I did. I made music personally for my own ears and I played guitar for my own ears,” he said.
