Richard Tyler Blevins, known as Ninja across social media, is an American gamer, author, and social media star best known for his Fortnite streaming on Twitch. Ninja first started his gamer career in 2009 when he began playing Halo 3 professionally for various organizations. He soon moved to Twitch, where he streamed himself playing Fortnite Battle Royale. In 2018, he set the record on Twitch for the largest concurrent audience on an individual stream (outside of tournament events) when he played Fortnite with Drake, Travis Scott, and Juju Smith-Schuster. 

Since joining Twitch, Ninja has become one of the most-followed active gamers on Twitch with more than 16.9 million followers. In 2018, Ninja became the first-ever esports gamer to be featured on ESPN Magazine. 

The gamer has also released several books through a deal with Random House, which includes the popular book “Get Good: My Ultimate Guide to Gaming.”

Ninja first started his gamer career in 2009 when he began playing Halo 3 professionally for various organizations, including Cloud9, Renegades, Team Liquid and Luminosity Gaming. By 2011, he had opened up his first streaming account and began online streaming his gaming. At the time, he played H1Z1 and then played PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. 

When Ninja began playing Fortnite Battle Royale in 2017, his fanbase and viewership started to take off for the first time. From 2017 to 2018, he had gained more than 1.5 million followers on his Twitch account. In 2018, he set the record on Twitch for the largest concurrent audience on an individual stream (outside of tournament events): more than 630,000 viewers; he would later break his own record just several months later. 

During that 2018 event, Ninja streamed himself playing Fortnite with Drake, Travis Scott, and Juju Smith-Schuster. The stream later inspired Epic Games to host a pro-am event in the name of charity, where streamers were paired with celebrities. 

Since joining Twitch, Ninja has become one of the most-followed active gamers on Twitch with more than 16.9 million followers. Ninja’s huge growth in followers on Twitch is largely considered to be tied to Fortnite Battle Royale’s success. In 2018, Epic Games said they earned more than $3 billion in revenue, primarily from Fortnite; the same year, Ninja earned close to $10 million. Epic Games gave Ninja his own cosmetic skin to the game in 2020 as their first part in their “Icon Series.” 

Ninja was paid more than $1 million in 2019 to help promote Electronic Arts’ Apex Legends, a competing game to Fortnite. 

In 2019, Ninja left Twitch when he signed an exclusive streaming deal on Microsoft’s Mixer streaming platform, a competing product to Twitch. His wife and manager Jessica told The Verge that using Twitch had stopped him from growing his brand outside video gaming and “it really seemed like he was kind of losing himself and his love for streaming.”

Mixer was shut down in 2020, and Ninja returned to Twitch, where he signed an exclusive, multi-year streaming deal with Twitch. He returned to streaming on the platform the same day. 

In addition to his Twitch page, Ninja has acquired more than 24 million subscribers on YouTube, where he streams himself playing Fortnite and other games. 

Ninja has appeared in a number of television shows in addition to his work online. He’s been on “Celebrity Family Feud” and “Family Feud.” He also appeared on the second season of the Fox reality music competition “The Masked Singer” as the Ice Cream Cone, but was later eliminated.
