Gurkiran Kaur Sidhu Reveals How She & Jagmeet Singh Deal With All The Trolls & Hate

Gurkiran Kaur Sidhu and Jagmeet Singh are prominently in the public eye and for better or worse, being public figures sometimes comes with online and real-life hate.

Sidhu is a fashion designer with an Instagram following of 139K and her husband NDP leader Singh, prominently known on TikTok for his political videos, has over 800K followers on the app.

Sidhu shared with Narcity how she deals with hate, her coping mechanisms, and what it’s like to be in a partnership with someone who receives their fair share of scrutiny.

How do you deal with hateful messages, trolls & hecklers?

“He is way better at handling it than I am. I get stressed out. I get nervous. Sometimes it gives me anxiety, but I feel like as sad as it sounds, he’s kind of dealt with this his whole life, so for him to deal with it, it comes almost naturally now,” Sidhu stated.

“In any situation where he feels that his biggest thing is to want to understand why someone is heckling or why someone is trolling and try to connect with them.”

“Whereas sometimes I’m like oh my gosh, ‘why are you being mean?’ That’s kind of my reaction like ‘oh, why are you being mean?’ and his thing is ‘Why do you feel the need to be mean?'”

“He handles things way better than I do. Even when it comes to social media, nothing really phases him, and I think it’s so impressive. It’s like crazy impressive sometimes I’m like, okay chill like you’re just with me you don’t need to put up a front, but there is no front that’s just actually who he is.”

“For me, social media sometimes if I see negative comments I’m going to want to delete them. I just don’t want that in my like space, and I know being on a– giving a public platform is going to happen, it’s naturally going to happen. But sometimes even I, it gets a little bit stressful, and he’s always in that space of you know it’s going to happen you can either get upset about it or it’s more so just understanding where that other person is coming from and so I like his approach better than getting upset.”

“But, yeah, it gets tough sometimes, but for the most part, seeing how Jagmeet handles it, I’m always in awe, so it makes me want to be more zen about it too.”

When you get a wave of anxiety, how do you deal with it?

“I just grip onto his hand really tightly. I just grip onto his hand and I will not let go for dear life. So, my coping is to be around him because his really zen-like chill energy always helps me.”

“So anytime I’m feeling a little anxious, he’s my first person to call. If I see via social media, I go to him to chat with him about it because he’s going to help me feel better about it. Or if it’s in person, oh hundred per cent I’m going to.”

“I don’t know if anyone’s ever noticed this, but even when there was a man in, I can’t remember the city it was last, last campaign he was just saying something about like if he had cut his turban off that people will like you more. And I remember like he’s having a very positive conversation and like no one could even tell what the conversation was about unless you were actually listening to the context of it because they were both so polite to each other.”

“And I remember just like gripping onto Jagmeet, and no one could tell, but I was like that was my way of dealing with it, and he’s just reassuring me kind of like, gripping me back like it’s going to be okay.”

“So, so far, that’s been working.”

How do you deal with someone being rude towards your partner?

“As a partner, you want to be like ‘please don’t be mean to my husband,’ but then I also know my husband is going to deal with it a lot better than I will.”

“Because he’s going to use his voice and he’s going to use his words, and he’s going to try and reason, and he’s going to want to be you know he’s going to want to connect, and he’s going to want to relate, so it works out. I never, I’ve never felt the need to just be like don’t be mean to him because he’s got it handled.”

“And so in those kinds of situations, I think if there’s someone who can handle it and make you feel okay and at peace, even after the whole altercation, it’s him. So yeah, I appreciate him for always being so calm about every situation.”
