Soleil Wheeler, known as Ewok on social media, is an American professional gamer best known as a high-level deaf Fortnite player. Ewok started to play Fortnite in 2018 and quickly ascended the ranks as a talented player. The gamer first gained notoriety when the popular streamer TimTheTatman hosted Ewok. In 2019, Ewok signed as an official partner with Twitch. The same year, Ewok joined the prestigious gaming organization FaZe Clan. At the time, the player was one of the youngest players in the organization and FaZe Clan’s only deaf member.  

Ewok made headlines in 2020 when he came out as trans and announced his new pronouns: he/him. The announcement came on National Coming Out Day. The streamer also revealed he is bisexual.

Soleil Wheeler, known as Ewok on social media, was born on September 18, 2005 in the United States. Ewok and his family are deaf. Ewok’s father was a well-known sign language professor on the TV show “ASL That!” 

As of September 2021, Soleil “Ewok” Wheeler has more than 343,900 followers on Twitch, 349,200 followers on Twitter, 540,000 followers on Instagram and 148,000 subscribers on YouTube. 

Ewok started to play Fortnite in 2018 and quickly ascended the ranks as a talented player. Ewok first gained notoriety when the popular streamer TimTheTatman hosted Ewok. Several Team Solo Mid members also played with Ewok to show support. Many of Ewok’s early streams were watched by Twitch staff, Epic Games employees and other streamers. 

Because Ewok is deaf, he uses sound visualization in the game to be aware of players walking up and other noises during the game. When he plays with other teammates, he uses a chat box on a second monitor to communicate with teammates. 

“Sometimes having to physically move my hands over, somebody will shoot me. So I’ll try and rush my hands back over to play. It can be a little challenging,” the player told CNN. 

In 2019, Ewok signed as an official partner with Twitch. Many celebrities and gamers congratulated him, including the famous gamer Ninja, who signed “hello” to him during a stream the next day. 

The same year, Ewok joined the prestigious gaming organization FaZe Clan. At the time, the player was one of the youngest players in the organization and FaZe Clan’s only deaf member.  

“I wanted to really jump into that and make history,” Ewok told CNN Business after joining FaZe Clan. “It’s a great opportunity to help inspire other girls… they can join any organization. They can play any game.”

In 2019, Ewok announced he would be leaving Twitch to join Mixer, a new streaming service by Microsoft. In June 2020, he left Mixer following the service’s shutdown. 

In October 2020, Ewok came out as trans and announced his new pronouns: he/him. The announcement came on National Coming Out Day. The streamer also revealed he is bisexual. 

“This is huge especially I am in FaZe and first transgender guy in t1 esports organization. There are not many trans people on organizations or stuff like that. I want to be honest as possible with you guys. This is truly a big decision and I know it’ll impact some people. I’ll need y’all support. I truly appreciate it if you supports. It means the world to me. Thank you. Thank you for being patient with me,” the streamer wrote in a long Twitter post.
