What Is Concept Art?

Before concept art is a career, it’s a concept.

Concept art is a general term for the process of developing ideas into visual form. Concept artists use their work to help define and develop new creative ideas that would later be translated into more practical forms of media, such as video games or film. In many cases concept art can be the basis for a film or game project, and concept artists are in demand in many entertainment industries.

Concept art is used to convey the ideas of a production designer, director, producer, and other key players involved in the production of films such as Avatar and Pixar’s WALL-E.

Artists create concept art through various means including hand drawings, paintings using a variety of mediums, 3D modeling and rendering, rendering on the computer with various programs, or even by making models and photographing them. This concept art is used to convey ideas that are shared among the creative team involved in production of any given film, game, or other project.

Why Concept Art Is Important

Concept art is important to video games, film concept artists are constantly working on concept design. These concept design can change with the project you are working on.

They answer questions about the world they build, the culture of it’s inhabitants and their history, what creatures live there or have lived there before—they help create a believable backdrop that helps set up the audience for what is about to happen in their story.

In film, concept art serves a lot of different purposes from creating ideas so others can see them and comment on them to previsualizing for the director so they can have an idea of how it will work in real life before the scene is shot. Concept artists are integral in making concept art for movies and games because concept art is what everyone will see from the very start of a project all the way to when it’s released.

History Of Concept Art

Before concept art was a career, concept artists were working to create inspiration for others who would then take their ideas and use them. This can be seen throughout history, in Ancient Greece concept art was used to help build temples that are still standing today. Michelangelo worked on concept art for the Sistine Chapel even though he wasn’t painting it.

Today concept artists are working in all walks of life to convey ideas through drawings, paintings, 3D models and much more. These concept artists work hard to help others see and understand what they are trying to achieve.

As concept art continues to be more and more popular, concept artists will continue to work hard creating ideas for video games, movies and other forms of entertainment.

It is the concept artist who helps authors bring their world alive on paper or a computer screen.

Examples of Concept Art

Ever wonder what it would be like to explore an entire world? Take a look at these concept art pieces that focus on worlds and characters.

Character Concept Art

In this piece of fantasy character concept art, Skillshare instructor and artist Justin Goby Fields started by finding inspiration on Pinterest. Curating images from the insect kingdom helped him hone in on what made his final creation so unique!

Fields illustrated just the bust of his character, but in class he explained that once you get the head and chest right everything else will fall into place.

Equipment Concept Art

To develop concept art for equipment like weapons, armor and shields; the same process typically applies. Many artists first turn to Google Images or Pinterest in order get inspiration from technical aspects of pieces they want make later on–in this case Nina Mikhailova gathered images of suits og armor which will help her better understand how it would look when designing an actual piece!

Skillshare student Nina Mikhailova gathered images of suits of armor to prepare her to design her own equipment concept art.

The armor that the illustrator had envisioned quickly became a reality. She began sketching out her rough designs and then finalized them to make it as detailed, yet simple for young children’s minds too see in game terms like how many plates there are or what color each one is made of (blue steel).

World-Building Concept Art

As a concept artist, you’re the one who creates entire worlds for movies and video games. You may have to think about how color schemes will be used in your work or take into account what kind of animal might live on this planet- but it can also involve thousands upon thousands details!

As an expert at world building (or Recreation Setting Design), many people see me as both creative director/lead designer along wth other duties like writing background.

Aaron Jones, a Skillshare student and architect of the lone tower in his imagined world described it as “an endlessly tall structure that reaches into the heavens with another long descent below.” He also added some design inspiration for this building including an explainer video about why single inhabitant needed living quarters at such high heights.

Mikhailova’s final concept art illustration, depicting a suit of armor encrusted with jewels.

From those words, he created an initial sketch of the tower. Then with some refinements to make it more detailed and finalize his work on this architectural wonder for all ages!

In this initial sketch of Jones’ world, you can see far below the tower.

What Does a Concept Artist Do?

Concept artists work to create and refine drawings and other types of concept art (including digital concept art) that help the audience see what the author is trying to convey.

Though concept artists can be used across all mediums, their main job is to develop characters, props, environments and anything else that’s needed for a specific project or movie.

In concept art, concept artist create artwork which can be either from personal initiative or in response to a brief. This artwork may be required for anything from marketing campaigns , through merchandising, to publicity . In some cases a concept may include market research or making animation tests.

Concept artists have to have the skills needed in every field that they wish to work in. They should be able to create concept art for almost every medium, whether it’s animation or games concept artists need drawing skills and a creative eye as well as the ability to use their imagination.

In the first few iterations of a character concept, variation and experimentation are key.

How Do You Become a Concept Artist?

As a beginning concept artist, you may be wondering what it takes to make the transition from pencils and paper. Here’s some advice on getting started in this field of artistry!

Hone Your Fundamental Art Skills

To be a successful concept artist, you’ll need an expert-level grasp on art fundamentals.

If your work revolves around animation and illustration for both TV shows as well as animated films then it’s important not to just think of them as cartoons; since we want realistic details included in our creations too! Taking the time learn these basic skills will help improve all areas if artwork–giving us more opportunities when searching professional jobs which can lead towards personal success.

Consider a Specialty

If you want to stand out from other concept artists, it can be helpful to specialize in a certain element of the story. For example, if characters are your thing then focus on designing them specifically well and everything should fall into place!

The idea behind this tip is that by focusing solely on what one likes or excels at there’s less risk for failure which means more success overall when trying new things outside their comfort zone – like hopefully becoming an artist who creates all kinds of awesome stuff instead just cars/clothes/.

Some concept artists specialize in just one specific visual element, like weapons.

Develop a Portfolio

Like you would for any specific type of art, it’s important to have a portfolio. Your work will be what helps potential employers see your creativity and style; make sure there are around 20 pieces in this collection so they can get an idea about all aspects including skillset!

When you apply for a specific job, it’s often helpful to include one or two pieces that exemplify the style of work and design they want—even if your own personal style is unique.

This can also help demonstrate how adaptable (and inexperienced) beginners like yourself are by showing off some samples from different projects of theirs- not just their most recent ones which may not show off all aspects of what makes YOU great!

Make Connections

As with any other career, becoming a concept artist often begins by who you know. To start your journey in the field of artistry it is important that this includes artists and designers alike so they can help challenge one another to become better at their craft over time too!

You might think that networking with other professionals in your space and making connections online is enough, but there’s no better way to get discovered than attending events.

These will give you an opportunity not only meet people who could be potential fans or clients for what you do–but also help build up exposure which can put YOU on the radar of art directors looking for new talent!

Artist tips for creating concept art

All Great Concepts Start With a Plan

Before a concept artist can even begin to start concept art they need a plan. This is because concept artists should be able to think ahead and create concept art that works with the overall marketing campaign, through merchandising, to publicity . In some cases a concept may include market research or making animation tests.

However you’ll find that concept artists who work in the film industry will likely require concept artists to come up with concept art that can be used for concept art and concept development.

For example, character concept art that is then turned into costume concept art and then onto real costumes!

The main reason this is important is because concept artists need to think about how their concept artwork will appear when it is translated to the final concept art.

They need to make sure that there are enough details in their concept artwork, but not too many that it’s confusing or cluttered for others who will then have to translate that concept into concept art .

Having the right Tools

Having concept art how to will not be possible without the right concept art tools. For example, concept artists should have a good concept art software which should include Photoshop and an updated version of Illustrator so you can create concept artwork for all formats!

The discussion on concept artist tools is actually pretty important because this means that the concept artist has the concept art tools that are most appropriate for concept art.

For example, concept artists who are more interested in doing concept art on the computer rather than using physical tools would need to adapt their concept artist toolkit accordingly!

The concept artist’s concept art tools will be different depending on where they are operating, what types of clients they have and even the concept artist’s concept art experience.

For example, a concept artist working in a studio will need different concept art tools than one who is doing freelance work.

Concept art = concept + art

Concept art is not just for the epic or its beautiful execution. It’s artwork that grows out of a design process, well rooted in an idea which supports storytelling. The priority should be identified as needs and wants – what does this story need? What can we offer them to make it more compelling?

Do dynamic research

Research breeds authenticity in the design evolution, from concept to final product. Like breaking rules before knowing them is important because it makes for creative innovation and originality that will be remembered long after anything else has been forgotten by time or modern culture changes too quickly around us

Research helps designers create innovative designs by making sure they know what belongs where on an object/environment . It also provides valuable insight into how people interact with objects so their needs can somehow become met through function alone.

Think inside the box

As a designer, I believe the best ideas come from thinking outside of what you know. But this is only possible if your understanding reaches deep inside and knows how all components work together in order to form something new or improve upon an existing product for consumers’ needs.

Sfaturi de design conceptual pentru artiști - Cum Se Face

The box is a powerful thing. As the designer of your own artwork, you need to know how it works in order for there be any hope at all of breaking free from its confines and finding new ways around or through whatever obstacles are placed before us along our journey as artists.

Design loosely

One key discipline I’ve learned over the years is to design with my arm and draw in a way that’s dynamic.

There has been this balance between freedom, control (of movement), creativity when drawing or scultping either lightly but not too much so it becomes stagnant like an outline without any detail added onto them–or having more weight behind your wrist while also holding still enough where you can confidently create detailed pieces of artwork which will last longer without being damaged easily because there was no urgency involved during creation process.

I love how the images in this image show different techniques. I can see that it’s a 90-minute demo process with plenty of arm flexibility, so you’ll have time to try out all your options before making decisions about what is best for your canvas size and style preference.

After taking our photo together on an 18×24 inch panel art piece (which gave me lotsa room!), we moved onto iphone photos–taking high resolution pictures using their wide angle lens which then gets compressed down into picture files within photoshop software where people like myself edit colors/values differently every day!

Understand composition

Getting to grips with composition is vital for the structural strength of design. Composition isn’t just a standalone term that simply describes an arrangement or shape; instead, realise that it’s perspective, value and color placed harmoniously in order tell their own story more efficiently- something we should all take into account when creating our designs!

Use perspective

There are many ways to capture an object or scene. For example, the way you position your camera can give viewers a different perspective than what they’re used too and this has strong psychological effects on their perception of that subject matter.

It all boils down how far away from us (the audience) our eyes would be placed when looking through these cameras at various points during filming which gives rise for some interesting conclusions about human behavior!

Play with the viewer’s perception

Visual aesthetics is the study of how compositional elements (value, perspective, staging and color) interact with each other to create visual story. There are many aspects that need consideration when it comes down to this topic including perception by an audience member Evaluation or reaction time in order for one’s message be effective enough.

It can’t just rely on understanding composition because there will always competing messages out there which could confuse someone who doesn’t understand where they stand as far as what you want them do believe based off your work.

Know the rules of value

The three important rules of value are:

It controls focal points – usually the brightest area, highest contrast or when a predominant encloses opposite- it gives an illusion that forms 3D form. Value creates depth by varying range between dark and light which alters your perception on distance created through shading techniques.

What do concept artists use to draw?

Photoshop

Photoshop is often considered the holy grail of concept art. It’s not just industry standard but also has several other products you can use which are perfectly good in their own right and some familiarity with Photoshop won’t hurt either!
