Billie Eilish is an American singer and songwriter best known for her breakout hit album “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” including her smash hit single “Bad Guy.” The young artist first became popular when a song she recorded with her brother went viral on Soundcloud.
The artist is best known for her music and her aesthetic, which is known to be outside the mainstream and unique. She has come under fire for wearing baggy clothes. In addition, she will change her hair color from time to time.
Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell, known as Billie Eilish, was born on December 18, 2001 in Los Angeles, California to parents Maggie and Patrick. She has one brother, Finneas. Billie and her brother are of Irish and Scottish descent.
Billie was homeschooled growing up, and her parents — both amateur musicians — taught her about music and the basics of songwriting. Billie’s parents encouraged her and her brother to explore whatever they liked to do.
As of September 2021, Billie has more than 6.1 million followers on Twitter, 30 million followers on Facebook, 42.6 million subscribers on YouTube, and 90 million followers on Instagram.
Billie worked doing background vocal work for several movies growing up, but she first rose to fame in 2015 when she posted the song “Ocean Eyes” to her SoundCloud page. The song was written and produced by her brother, and originally intended for her band.
However, when the song went live it started getting picked up by a bunch of different outlets, including radio stations and music supervisors such as Beats 1, KCRW, BBC One, Zane Lowe, Jason Kramer, Annie Mac, and Chris Douridas.
Finneas’ manager then reached out to him to discuss his sister’s potential. In a deal arranged by Finneas, Apple Music signed Billie to A&R company Platoon. Platoon will help up-and-coming artists before they get their first major deal.
Billie got a publicist and began working with luxury fashion brand Chanel to shape her image.
In 2016, the music video for “Ocean Eyes” was released. That fall, Billie signed to The Darkroom, a record label and artist management company. The man who signed Billie, Justin Lubliner, helped develop her up-and-coming persona and, instead of focusing on one single, working on creating her persona and aesthetic.
In 2017, Billie released her debut EP “Don’t Smile at Me.” The EP reached the top 15 in the U.S. U.K., Canada and Australia.
Two years later, in 2019, Billie released her first studio album titled “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” The album debuted as a hit in the U.S. and U.K. and became the best-selling album of 2019 in the U.S. Six of the singles on the album became Billboard Hot 100 top 40 songs: “When the Party’s Over”, “Bury a Friend”, “Wish You Were Gay”, “Xanny” and “Bad Guy.” “Bad Guy” became Billie’s first number one single in the U.S.
In 2020, Billie was tapped to write and record the new theme song for the latest James Bond film. The song, “No Time to Die,” became her first number one single in the U.K. She was the youngest person to ever record a James Bond theme song.
Since her rise to fame, Billie has received a number of prestigious awards: five Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, two Guinness World Records, three MTV Video Music Awards, and one Brit Award.
In addition to her awards, Billie has broken a number of records. She was the youngest person to ever win the four main Grammy categories — Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year — in the same year. She was the only person to win all four of these awards ever.
Billie is also the 23rd biggest artist of the digital singles era, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. She’s sold around 40 million singles in the U.S. alone.
Time Magazine put her on their first-ever “Time 100 Next” list.
Billie has kept her personal life somewhat private, including any romantic connections, but she has spoken about her anxiety and her life growing up in the spotlight a number of times.
