I tried searching but found very little in recent posts. I hope to “finish” off the stock tires this summer and am looking to replace them with pure street tires for commuting and the odd weekend in the canyons.I”m looking for durability on fast freeway commuting yet decent handling using stock sizes. These will spend 80-90% of their time at freeway speeds with the balance canyon running.I”m finding a lot of “unavailable” in my size. Suggestions? What works and is actually available?

Michelin Anakee 3″s. A 90/10 tire. ;-)Very high mileage compared to stock. PR4″s if you NEVER go off road.

IMHO, the tyres that came with my ‘18 V Strom are outstanding. Bridgestone Battle wings. No problems with them at all. I spend 99.999999999% of my time on pavement. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I had Dunlop TrailSmarts on my former Triumph and they were excellent tyres in all conditions. I plan shortly to use them also on my Vee. On the Triumph they were better than Anakees as they maintained the quick steering that the Anakees had slowed somewhat. Anakees are otherwise good tyres.A Friend with the same Vee as mine will be changing for the latest version of the OEM Bridgestones which He liked. Another tyre to consider is Michelin PR5 Trails
I like Shinko 712s. Used them on my 650 and just put a rear on my 1000.The OEM front on Stroms is a weird size *edit* 110/80. Not many tires in that size. The more common 110/90 doesn”t allow much clearance. Raising the fender with the AdventureTech adapter is prudent I think. Gives a lot more tire choices.
Can”t really go too wrong with :Michelin PR4″sPirelli Angel GT”sBridgestone T31″sMetzler Tourance NextOf these, I would choose the Tourance Nexts. I ran a set of these on a BMW 700GS in Italy, Sardinia, and Corsica. I didn”t baby them and after 4,000 miles they didn”t show a lot of wear and they handled good.Admittedly, I haven”t ran the other tires I listed on my VStrom but they worked well on my ST1300. I had a pair of Michelin Anakee 2″s on my VStrom and they worked surprising well and lasted about 13,000 miles. I have switched to Anakee 3″s and they seem to be doing as well. Although listed as an 80/20 tire, they handle high speed pavement/twisties surprising good but for your needs, I think I would go with the Metzlers.
Nothing as quiet and smooth as good street tires. Especially if you like something that gives complete confidence when you get them hot in the “canyons”! My favorite all around tire on the V STroms is the Bridgestone T-30″s which have evolved into the T-31 series. Available in sizes to fit the V Strom. Good mileage, stick in wet or dry, absolutely as quiet as you will find. Prices have gone up for the T-31″s. but you can shop around and/or get the rebates offered occasionally.

I”m a big fan of the Michelin PR series. They have great grip, wear acceptably and give the bike a really wonderful steering feel. Light, accurate, and with good feedback.
I have not tried the Road 5 series Michelin. Liked the PR3″s a lot. But the PR4 I did NOT care for. Less mileage than the PR3. But my biggest complaint is the front tire. Push them really hard and they squirm too much. Even under hard braking they move a bit. But in turns, especially when you get them hot, they do not inspire confidence. Worse cupping at recommended pressures than before. Several BMW RT owners that were Michelin loyal have found this too. The Road 5 looks like it might be a lot better in that respect.

For what you are looking to do as long as the tire is round, black, has tread on it and is in the proper size you”ll be fine.

Wear characteristics for distance highway use is definitely not an any-tire-will-do kind of thing. A TKC80 will be spanked in probably under 6k. I”m a big fan of the Anakee 3, but if you go with that be sure you”re okay with the noise they make. They are not quiet.

Yeah and a Shinko 244 would be toast in 2,500 miles. But we don”t know how many miles the OP is riding per year. If he ride 1,000 miles a year and got 2 years out a $50 tire that not a bad ROI. If he rides 50,000 miles year spending 80 or 90% of time on the highway if I were him I”d buy a car and sit in the A/C while jamming to my favorite tunes and leave the bike at home. The OP asked “what is the best road tire” that is an impossible question to answer.
Have used:Trail Wing – pretty decent, mild wear, not a noisy tire at all and decent grip on tarmac to gravel. Mud, dirt, and sand to be tackled at one”s peril using these (thus the Deathwing moniker.)PR4 – tells you everything about the road but can feel a tick skittish, lovely grip all around, wear like iron (mine have 6k mi and look new.)Anakee 3 – Michelin grip in the wet and dry, really howl at highway speed, mild wear.Shinko 705 – two rears to one front, surprising levels of traction in all conditions, somewhat rapid wear and they do howl when worn.Tourance Next – I do not like this tire. Twice I went into a flat-tracker slide while making a turn on dry pavement with mild throttle. Worse, the Next felt greasy in the wet.
Being slow doesn”t make a boring bike. I had a R1 which I thought was boring. Boring is a bike that doesn”t speak to you. If you like what your bike is saying let it”s voice take you to far flung places. – Vertical C

I”ll ride only about 5K this year but in the past typically ride about 10K, most of it commuting (when the temp is under 3 digits). I have a 70 mile round-trip commute and the Strom not only saves me 30 minutes on the ride home (thank you California lane splitting) but I get twice the mileage of my car.

I found the howl of the Anakee 3 to be even worse when cornering. They were crazy loud. I tried the Bridgestone T31 on a recent 6000 mile trip. Good tires, but I think I”ll go back to the Metzler Tourance. Fantastic wear and grip with no noise.
